I feel blessed to be able to travel during Wigwam’s off season to spend quality time with family and friends. With Emily spending her gap year teaching in Paris we’ve missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years together but are definitely making up for lost times! Other than the Berkshires my favorite city has to be Paris! I love visiting museums and every time I brought the kids we visit museums! My corporate career in AT&T and Cisco gifted me wonderful enduring friendships. The Jourets have been friends for over 20 years as Cisco colleagues from Asia to headquarters in San Jose. We watched each others’ children grow up and Guido Jouret, in addition to being Cisco’s Chief Information Officer, had setup my home network for just about every single move from (Hong Kong, Beijing, Palo Alto, San Jose). Some may question the sanity of opening another shop next door to 57 Park Street but from what we see on our opening day our strategy will work! Jessie filled the bakery cases with cakes, Berkshire Brookies, Park Street Pizza cookies and yes Berkshire Boba Bombs! The bombs are selling as we expected singly as well as in gift boxes. Our strategy is to sell whole cakes, pizza cookies, Brookies and boba bombs and attractive home decor and gifts from Home Sweet Home and people will still be able to buy a boba tea, a smoothie, a whoopee pie and scone from 57 Park Street. Jessie and I spoke to iBerkshires this morning and we believe true joy is when we can use our skills to bring people joy. We believe our plan will bring people from adjacent towns to come to Adams. We're so grateful for the support of our friends, neighbors, cabin guests and coffeehouse patrons for another amazing year. This year, however, things are different and we have an ask as we plan on closing for the 5th season . As many of you know we are involved in a second project to help to revitalize downtown Adams. We opened a Boba shop called 57 Park Street and it's been on life support since May 2023. The easier decision is to shut it down however Jessie Kratz, who started out as our baker, has turned into a strategic partner who shares our vision to help to increase foot traffic in downtown Adams. We have decided to join forces to combine our skills to bring traffic to Adams. One of the ideas we have is to create delicious edible gifts that are "must have's" when someone visits the Berkshires. We created the "Berkshire Boba Bombs" which is basically diff flavors of "Bubble Tea" that Jessie encased in white chocolate. We name the box of 4 and 6 "Instant Party - just add hot water" and test marketed them at the Wigwam where we have guests and patrons from all over the world who know about boba teas. We also created the "Berkshire Care Bear Care Baskets" for college students during exam weeks. Parents can order the Berkshire Boba Bombs, a Wiggy Bear, a magic mug and Jessies delicious treats. These beautiful "edible gift baskets" will be delivered into dorm rooms starting with MCLA and Williams College during exam week. For Thanksgiving Jessie has put together this amazing menu for advance ordering and pick up at 57 Park Street and with a modest fee we will also ship anywhere in the US. Shipping edible gifts and gift items out of Park Street is something we're going to work on and we welcome any help you can give us by 1: ordering 2: getting the words out and 3: putting us in touch with the college connections. When we started this journey Wayne and I knew nothing about running a gift shop. We traveled to iconic gift shops around the US and every where we went we asked the shop keeper "what are your top selling items"? Our initial strategy was “paint lipstick on a pig” when we bought the Wigwam 5 years ago and we were going to rent it out and manage it from Virginia. It was all the locals who turned out on our Fran’s opening day on October 13, 2018 who changed our mind! Everyone from the mayor to prior Wigwam owners, so many people in walkers, canes and wheel chairs who told us they never expected the doors to the Wigwam opened again! We felt so loved and so much members of the community. Together, we got through Covid and we’ve created a “must see”, a destination or a “unicorn”! Wayne and I vie for the “best barista on the mountain title” on a daily basis and we compete to pour a cup of happiness when people walk into our coffeehouse. Jens and Irina are German tourists from Stuttgart which is only about 1 1/2 miles to the Swiss border and they can see why early travelers refer to this view as "America's Switzerland". At some peaks in Switzerland one can see mountains of 3 countries and here at the Wigwam Western Summit one is mesmerized by the beautify of the tri-state Mountain View (The Taconics of New York, The Green Mountain Range of Vermont and Mt. Greylock). They are bringing home not only the beautiful memories / photos from the Berkshires but also lots of souvenirs! Alone but not lonely! Solo traveler Sharon stayed in one of the most coveted cabins and checked in with me a couple of times a day. Legend has it that Amish women baked off leftover cake batter into cookies that they then sandwiched together with frosting. The women would put the treats into farmer's lunchboxes and upon finding them the farmers would yell “Whoopie!!” thus lending the name we know it by today. Whatever the origin, the Wigwam Whoopie Pie is here to stay. The Vidale’s are Swiss and live in Geneva. We had a great conversation about why early tourists in the 1920’s refer to this regions as “ America’s Switzerland “. These mountains are not as dramatic as the Alps, however, in the Alps you can see mountains of 3 countries while at the Wig you can see mountains of 3 states (The Green Mountain range of Vermont), The Taconic of New York and of course Mt. Greylock, the highest peak of the state of Massachusetts. So this is the power of "word of mouth"! You remember Bob, the man who said a bite of the Apple Cider Whoopie Pie was like a slice of heaven and to show his love to his wife JoAnne who stuck with him through thick and thin for 40 years, he said she could have more than one bite of his whoopee pie?" Apparently they were sent to the Wigwam by someone name Jacob from the Hancock General Store (I didn't know there was a general store in Hancock but I'll definitely go and thank Jacob in person). They are vacationing with another 3 couples at the Vacation Village in Hancock. They wanted a coffeehouse with a beautiful view, a place to get good coffee, local maple syrup, great breakfast, snacks, shirts, a clean bathroom and a hiking trail. They came a few days a go and came back today in numbers!! They brought with them Mary Lou, John, Peg, Norm, Candy and Frank. The 4 couple bought almost everything in the shop, went for a hike, enjoyed a photo shoot and John, who's a retired police and I talked a bit about how frequent the police come by. I told him both the state troopers and the North Adams Police are all addicted to our cold brew and whoopee pies and we see them all the time! I'm sending them to our fudge maker Mo to the Fudge Factory and see the most beautiful part of The Mohawk Trail and one of my favorite destination the Bridge of Flowers! We're so glad to be part of a memory making opportunities and showcase the best Berkshires had to offer!
